چکیده
Following recent work of Halperin, Lee, and Read, and Kalmeyer and Zhang, a double-layer electron system with total Landau-level filling factor ν = 1/2 is mapped onto an equivalent system of fermions in zero average magnetic field interacting via a Chern-Simons gauge field. Within the random-phase approximation a new, low-lying, diffusive mode, not present in the ν = 1/2 single-layer system, is found. This mode leads to more singular low-energy scattering than appears in the single layer system, and to an attractive pair-ing interaction between fermions in different layers which grows stronger as the layer spacing is decreased. The possible connection between this pairing interaction and the experimentally observed fractional quantum Hall effect in double-layer systems is discussed.

Onset of interlayer phase coherence in a bilayer two-dimensional electron system: Effect of layer density imbalance
Tunneling and Coulomb drag are sensitive probes of spontaneous interlayer phase coherence in bilayer two-dimensional electron systems at total Landau level filling factor nT=1. We find that the phase boundary between the interlayer phase coherent state and the weakly coupled compressible phase moves to larger layer separations as the electron density distribution in the bilayer is imbalanced. T...

The transresistance (i.e. the voltage induced in one layer by a current in another) between composite fermions in double-layers of half-filled Landau levels is shown to be dominated by scattering due to singular gauge field fluctuations arising from the antisymmetric combination of density fluctuations in two layers. The drag rate is found to be proportional to T 4/3 for T less than an energy s...
متن کاملBilayer quantum hall systems at nu(T)=1: coulomb drag and the transition from weak to strong interlayer coupling.
Measurements revealing anomalously large frictional drag at the transition between the weakly and strongly coupled regimes of a bilayer two-dimensional electron system at total Landau level filling factor nu(T)=1 are reported. This result suggests the existence of fluctuations, either static or dynamic, near the phase boundary separating the quantized Hall state at small layer separations from ...
متن کاملOpening an Energy Gap in an Electron Double Layer System at Integer Filling Factor in a Tilted Magnetic Field
We employ magnetocapacitance measurements to study the spectrum of a double layer system with gate-voltage-tuned electron density distributions in tilted magnetic fields. For the dissipative state in normal magnetic fields at filling factor ν = 3 and 4, a parallel magnetic field component is found to give rise to opening a gap at the Fermi level. We account for the effect in terms of parallel-f...
متن کاملVanishing Hall resistance at high magnetic field in a double-layer two-dimensional electron system.
At total Landau level filling factor nu(tot)=1 a double-layer two-dimensional electron system with small interlayer separation supports a collective state possessing spontaneous interlayer phase coherence. This state exhibits the quantized Hall effect when equal electrical currents flow in parallel through the two layers. In contrast, if the currents in the two layers are equal, but oppositely ...
